    Must have ENG/Reporter microphone

Clearly, the MD46 is a top-class ENG/reporter microphone. It is a truly professional instrument which will last for years. As with all Sennheiser equipment, you will have to pay an initial premium purchase price, this is insignificant when one accepts the microphone will last for many years of hard use. I would also consider the MD46 as an excellent tool for a podcasting studio. Superb and rich voice reproduction is equal to many 400 pounds 'studio' voice microphones.

    PRO:

Beautiful rich voice reproduction. Learn to listen to the proximity of the microphone through headphones while making your interview. Care in use will reward with superb recordings. I use this microphone in noisy environments such as conference interviews. For much of my work the MD21 is my first choice: however: if the ambient sound is too great the MD46 comes into its own. I would recommend carrying MD46 and MD21 in your sound bag. One amazing aspect is you can use both microphones at one event, in differing 'ambient sound' situations, and the tonality of the interviewer's voice is identical. The MD46 is tough and over the years of using this microphone it has never let me down. it returns consistent results every time.

    CON:

None. Some may find the microphone slightly heavy: I would reply the almost zero handling noise is worth the extra weight. Held firmly and as vertically as possible you will have no problem. I would recommend owning an MD21 or MD42 to complement this microphone as the tight pattern is not always preferred. However, a seasoned reporter would have no issues in this area.

    BEST USES:

Reporting/ENG. Events interviews in noisy environments. Podcasting. All voice recording applications.

    BOTTOM LINE:

I would recommend this to a friend.

    Great microphone1 But...

Once the cable lock (little metal piece in the button edge of the XLR) connection wears off a little bit, the cable or transmitter piece does not lock anymore. That is a big problem. The bottom of the mic, the connector area, needs to be in a harder metal or add a metal sleeve.

    PRO:

    Great sound quality.

    CON:

    Durability

    BEST USES:

    ENG

    BOTTOM LINE:

I would recommend this to a friend.
